EL ACERCAMIENTO/THE APPROACH

El Acercamiento / The Approach is a multimedia transnational project conceived by Evelyn Serrano in collaboration with Havana-based artist and educator Yamile Pardo. The project investigates the past, present, and possible futures of Cuba–U.S. relations. In Havana, the process of normalizing relations between Cuba and the United States during the last years of the Obama Presidency was described as "el acercamiento"—the slow and cautious act of getting closer. Through this project, professional artists and arts students from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Los Angeles, the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro, and the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana came together to explore what an acercamiento between the two countries might look like.

Through urban interventions, workshops, performative actions, public dialogues, and exhibitions, participants develop artistic proposals that imagined and gave shape to multiple possible futures. The project invited both artists and audiences to actively engage in envisioning and enacting these futures. Over the course of four years, students and professional artists collaborated to create and present original visual and performing arts works in Havana, Los Angeles, and Miami. El Acercamiento / The Approach is part of the artistic initiatives of the California Institute of the Arts Center for New Performance (CNP) and Duende CalArts.
