YOUTH CIVIC ENGAGEMENT BANNERS AT PINEWOOD STREET ELEMENTARY

Evelyn worked with Pinewood youth to identify areas of celebration and concern from the perspective of some of the youngest members of the Sunland–Tujunga community, particularly within the Pinewood neighborhood. Through the project, Serrano connected students and their families to local free resources and led civic engagement workshops that supported participation and access for families—many of whom are recent immigrants representing more than 20 different nations. Elected officials and City department leaders were invited to meet with students and families to discuss community resources and accessibility.

As part of the project, Serrano led banner design workshops in which students created visual messages to inform and inspire their Pinewood community. The student-designed banners were installed along the school’s outer fence, and printed versions were also distributed to local businesses throughout the wider Sunland–Tujunga community, helping amplify youth perspectives and strengthen neighborhood connection.

This project was made possible by the California Arts Council's California Creative Corps Artist and Culture Bearer Fellowship.
