TUXUUNGA YOUTH RELATIONAL RECIPROCITY PROJECT

Through the Tuxuunga Youth Relational Reciprocity Project, Evelyn Serrano, in collaboration with Tongva Culture Bearers Tina Orduno Calderon and Lazaro Arvizu Jr. and the staff of Pinewood Street Elementary School, developed a series of learning experiences that center relationship-building with the land and local native ecosystem. The project included cultural assemblies, hands-on art workshops, traditional songs and storytelling, and site visits to Tuxuunga Creek.

Guided by the teachings and wisdom of Tongvé culture bearers, students were invited to cultivate relationships with plant and animal relatives, as well as with the waters, wind, sun, and other natural elements. Through these experiences, the project encouraged young people to deepen their sense of connection, respect, and responsibility toward the nature and more-than-human kin.

This project was made possible by the California Arts Council's California Creative Corps Artist and Culture Bearer Fellowship.
