THE BREATH BETWEEN US: STORY-HEALING IN TUXUUNGA

The Breath Between Us: Story Healing in Tuxuunga is a multi-sited, community-based art and healing project grounded in the ancestral lands of the Tongva people, sited in Sunland–Tuxunga — a place with a long history of both inclusion and exclusion, of inhalation and exhalation, of welcoming and turning away.

Across seven mapped “stations” — each a site marked by both harm and resilience — this project gathers story, movement, and collective reflection to mend relationships between people, land, and time.

Through walking, witnessing, performance, and dialogue, participants engage the living landscape of Tuxuunga — “The Place of the Old Woman” — listening to its layered histories and imagining futures that honor those who came before and the generations that will follow.
The project culminates in a documentary, weaving together the seven stations with community Future Design dialogues — a cinematic and civic journey toward intergenerational healing.

At its heart, this project is a practice of shared attention and care — connecting to the past, understanding the present, and imagining a future that nurtures both land and human communities. It calls on us to act together as one living ecosystem, learning how to be good ancestors to the generations who will be in relationship with Tuxuunga.
